SECURITY BOLLARDS

Security bollards are a common component of any urban landscape. Made of various materials, these highly secure pillars can be found within car parks, store entries, pavement areas and more. Despite the important role they play in outdoor safety, people walk past street bollards frequently without considering their actual purpose.

What is a Security Bollard?

What is a bollard? Security bollards are short and sturdy vertical posts used to control road traffic, prevent ram-raiding attacks, and regulate entrances and exits to exclusive areas. Bollards guide traffic and protect pedestrians, building, and property from vehicle collisions.

Bollards can be either crash or non-crash resistant, and may be static/fixed, removable, or retractable – suiting different applications.

In areas where many pedestrians are congregating, it may be necessary to install protection at the perimeter. This will offer protection in the event of an accidental or deliberate vehicular crash into the pedestrian area. This is becoming increasingly common in public areas to protect pedestrians, cycle lanes, park entrances, airport parking structures and school drop off locations. Bollards used in this way will offer a great deal of protection to people in the area preventing catastrophes.

Types of Bollards

Due to their versatility, there are many different types of security bollards. Below are the most common:

Automatic Bollards – Also known as rising bollards, these retract in and out of the ground based on their control device. While some offer high impact resistance, most use a hydraulic or electronic system to raise or lower as needed. They’re an efficient, versatile way to control traffic in a condensed area or for site-specific applications.

Decorative Bollard – Decorative bollards add a visual appeal for building fronts or sidewalks. They can guide traffic or mark specifically designated areas, such as handicapped parking, valet parking, or curb side services. Given these uses, they are not a feasible option for serious protection. Decorative bollards will not stop vehicles. Still, they are highly customisable and versatile. Consider a material that would add to the surrounding aesthetic like iron or aluminium for a modern style.

Fixed Bollards – Fixed security bollards are the most common type. These are permanent fixtures secured to the ground. Embedding them into the ground gives strength and security to the fixture. Fixed bollards are composed of strong materials, such as concrete or steel. Although practical, fixed bollards are not ideal for condensed spaces, such as parking lots or garages.

Removable and Retractable Bollards – Removable bollards act as placeholders to temporarily secure or block off designated areas. You can place them and remove them as needed. Retractable bollards, on the other hand, are permanent fixtures, but unlike fixed bollards, they can retract into the ground when necessary. Locking pins or sockets secure the bollards in place, but they can be removed for vehicle clearance.

Lighted Bollards – Fixed, retractable, embedded, or surface bollards can feature a lighted option, offering both safety and aesthetics in that area. Lighted bollards use aluminium or stainless-steel bodies to encase the wires and reflect the illumination. Whether used in parks, sidewalks, or outside buildings, lighted bollards allow for greater versatility and protection in that space.
